DISC 2014 The 28th International Symposium on Distributed Computing

NSF Travel Awards

Does Your Student Need Funds to Attend the DISC-2014 Symposium?

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has thankfully awarded the 2014 International Symposium on Distributed Computing (DISC-2014) a grant to partially support the travel of graduate students in US- based Universities to attend the Symposium. The travel award that each student can receive from this grant cannot exceed US $1,000.

To apply for a travel award, a graduate student in a US-based university needs to submit an application that consists of three pages:

  1. A one-page curriculum vita of the student
  2. A one-page personal statement from the student
  3. A one-page supporting letter from the student’s advisor

The student’s personal statement should include:

  • An overview of the student’s research interests and accomplishments (if any)
  • A description of the research themes of DISC that are likely to impact the student’s research

The supporting letter from the student’s advisor will include: (1) a confirmation that the student is in a good academic standing within their graduate program, and (2) a short statement describing the benefits that the student is expected to receive from attending the DISC-2014 Symposium.

The purpose of the NSF grant is to attract students who otherwise would not be able to attend the Symposium. Therefore, students who are designated to present an accepted paper at DISC 2014 are not allowed to apply for these travel awards.

A small panel has been chosen to review and evaluate all applications for these travel awards. The panel composition is as follows:

  • James Aspnes, Yale University
  • Vijay Garg, UT Austin
  • Mohamed Gouda, UT Austin

If the panel encounters two or more applications that are comparable in every respect, then the panel will rank higher applications from women and under-represented minorities.

Applications for these travel awards need to be submitted, no later than Friday August 22, 2014, by email to garg (at) ece.utexas.edu. The subject line of the email should read “DISC-travel <applicant name>”

We expect the travel awards to be announced by Thursday August 28, 2014.
