{"id":3648,"date":"2023-07-14T09:59:13","date_gmt":"2023-07-14T09:59:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.disc-conference.org\/wp\/disc2023\/?page_id=3648"},"modified":"2025-10-23T18:05:44","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T18:05:44","slug":"local-information","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.disc-conference.org\/wp\/disc2025\/local-information\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting to DISC"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Hotels<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.disc-conference.org\/wp\/disc2025\/accommodation\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"4085\">here <\/a>for hotel suggestions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Getting to the conference venue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>DISC 2025 will be held in <strong>Berlin, Germany<\/strong> on <strong><strong>October 27 \u2013 October 31, 2025<\/strong><\/strong>.&nbsp;The conference will be held at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harnackhaus-berlin.mpg.de\/en\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.harnackhaus-berlin.mpg.de\/en\">the Harnack House<\/a><\/strong>, a conference venue of the Max Planck Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The venue is located in the Dahlem district of Berlin, which resides in the southwestern part of Berlin. The campus of the Freie Universit\u00e4t Berlin is also in the same district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The closest stop is the <strong>Freie Universit\u00e4t U-Bahn (subway)<\/strong> <strong>stop<\/strong>. You can reach this stop using the <strong>U3 subway line<\/strong>. Please see below for further details about public transit in Berlin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can find detailed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harnackhaus-berlin.mpg.de\/contact\/directions\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.harnackhaus-berlin.mpg.de\/contact\/directions\">instructions on how to get to the Harnack House here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Getting to conference banquet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The DISC Banquet in the evening, starting 7 p.m. on 29th Oktober, takes place in the restaurant &#8220;Alter Krug&#8221; Dahlem. It is known as historic inn with beer garden since the early 19th century.<br><br>Address: K\u00f6nigin-Luise-Stra\u00dfe 52, 14195 Berlin<br>Website:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alter-krug-berlin.de\/\">https:\/\/www.alter-krug-berlin.de<\/a><br><br><strong>How to get there:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since it is very near to our conference location you can walk\u00a0within 16 minutes to the restaurant. Here are the options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Simply follow \u201eBr\u00fcmmer Stra\u00dfe\u201c until after 1300 metres you turn left on \u201eFabeckstra\u00dfe\u201c. When you reach \u201eK\u00f6nigin-Luise-Stra\u00dfe\u201c again turn left. You\u2019ll find the restaurant \u201eAlter Krug\u201c directly at the corner to \u201eFabeckstra\u00dfe\u201c.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you prefer th underground you can take Line U3 from station \u201e U Freie Universit\u00e4t\u201c to station \u201eU Dahlem Dorf\u201c. From there it\u2019s a walk of about 200 metres.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can take the Bus 110\u00a0 from station \u201eBitscher Str.\u201c at 18:42 o\u2018clock (only every 20 minutes). The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitberlin.de\/en\/travelling-berlin\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.visitberlin.de\/en\/travelling-berlin\">Visit Berlin website<\/a> gives some general information about travelling to Berlin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-small-font-size\">By train<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Berlin is easy to reach by train<\/strong> from most neighbouring countries. There are several (fairly reliable and fast) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitberlin.de\/en\/arrival-train\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.visitberlin.de\/en\/arrival-train\">train connections from various European cities to Berlin<\/a>, including night trains. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some rough estimates of travel times by train to Berlin from various European cities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Amsterdam (~6 hours)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brussels (~8 hours)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Budapest (~11 hours)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copenhagen (~7 hours)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>London (~9-10 hours)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paris (~8 hours)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prague (~4 hours)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rome (~14 hours)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stockholm (~15 hours)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vienna (~8 hours)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Warsaw (~6 hours)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Zurich (~9 hours)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are taking a long-distance train, you are likely to arrive to one of these train stations in Berlin: Berlin Hauptbahnhof (main station), Berlin Gesundbrunnen, Berlin Spandau, Berlin S\u00fcdkreuz, or Berlin Ostbahnhof. From these stations you can then continue your journey with Berlin public transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-small-font-size\">By airplane<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ber.berlin-airport.de\/en.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/ber.berlin-airport.de\/en.html\">The Berlin-Brandenburg international airport (BER) <\/a>is the central airport for Berlin.<br><br>The airport has its own train station from which you can reach to other parts of Berlin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The public transit connection from the BER airport to the conference venue takes around <strong>90-120 minutes<\/strong>. The simplest connection from the BER airport to the conference venue is to use a combination of the S-Bahn and the U-Bahn:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>At the BER airport, take the <strong>S9 train<\/strong> towards &#8220;<strong>Spandau Hbf<\/strong>&#8220;. You need to change to a subway at the stop named <strong>Warschauer Stra\u00dfe<\/strong> (after 11 stops).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At <strong>Warschauer Stra\u00dfe<\/strong> railway station, change to the <strong>U3 subway line<\/strong> heading towards &#8220;<strong>U Krumme Lanke<\/strong>&#8220;. You need to leave at the stop named &#8220;<strong>Freie Universit\u00e4t<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can buy tickets for local transit at the train station from the ticket vending machines. Note that you will need an ABC-ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">General information about Berlin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Berlin is the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany. It is the largest city in Germany, both in area and population. With a population of around 3.8 million people, it is the city with the highest population within city limits in the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Berlin is a technological and cultural hotspot in Europe, with numerous museums and world-famous sights. In terms of nature, Berlin and its surroundings have also plenty of green areas and parks, forests, rivers and numerous lakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main universities in Berlin are the<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Freie Universit\u00e4t Berlin (FU Berlin),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Humboldt-Universit\u00e4t zu Berlin), (HU Berlin) and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Technische Universit\u00e4t Berlin (TU Berlin).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also several research institutes in Berlin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-small-font-size\">Safety<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For a major city, Berlin is fairly safe. However, use common sense: keep an eye on your belongings in public transit, keep your valuables close to yourself, don&#8217;t wander into dark parks and alleys alone at night, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-small-font-size\">Language and currency<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>German is the official language in Germany. However, in the Berlin area English is widely spoken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The official currency in Germany is the euro. The availability electronic payments (e.g., credit and debit cards) is becoming more common, but it is still less common than in many other European countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should be able to pay for most things, such as hotel and restaurant fees, groceries, public transit tickets, and so on, with credit\/debit cards. However, some smaller shops, cafes and restaurants sometimes only accept cash payments, especially if the total cost is small. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-small-font-size\">Weather in October and November<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Berlin has an oceanic climate. The conference will take place in the autumn. In late October, the typical temperatures range between 5-15 Celsius degrees and some rain is to be expected. The daylength is around 9-10 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-small-font-size\">Public transport in Berlin<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Berlin has a comprehensive public transport system encompassing <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>local trains (S-Bahn),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>subways (U-Bahn),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>trams and lightrail (Stra\u00dfenbahn), and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>buses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To use the public transport, you need a valid ticket. You can buy one from the Berlin public transport company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bvg.de\/en\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bvg.de\/en\">BVG<\/a> or the regional transport company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vbb.de\/en\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.vbb.de\/en\/\">VBB<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few different options for buying tickets:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can buy physical single-use tickets from BVG and\/or VBB ticket vending machines at most train stations with a credit\/debit card. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can use the BVG ticket app on your mobile phone (requires an Internet connection).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In Berlin area, there are different transit zones. Be sure to check you have the right ticket type that covers the right zones:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Within &#8216;Berlin city proper&#8217;, an AB-ticket that covers zones A and B usually suffices. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you want to get from the BER airport to the city, or vice versa, you need an <strong>ABC-ticket<\/strong> that covers the zones A, B and C.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you&#8217;re travelling from the airport and will travel to the conference venue on most days, the most convenient option is to get a 7-day pass for the ABC zones (52.70 euros).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can also buy a 7-day pass for the AB zones (44.60 euros), and then buy any extension tickets to zone C (2.60 euros per piece) as necessary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Here is information about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bvg.de\/en\/subscriptions-and-tickets\/all-tickets#Single%20tickets\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bvg.de\/en\/subscriptions-and-tickets\/all-tickets#Single%20tickets\">ticket types<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Here is some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bvg.de\/en\/connections\/network-maps-and-routes\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bvg.de\/en\/connections\/network-maps-and-routes\">detailed information<\/a> about the tariff zones and the public transport network.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Visa Support Letter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need a visa support letter please write to Stefan Schmid from an institutional email, well in advance, indicating:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Given name<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Surname<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Passport origin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Date of birth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Passport number<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Occupation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Title of an accepted paper at DISC you are a coauthor of, if any<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hotels See here for hotel suggestions.
